Free The Eel
The time has come to
FREE the EEL!
The owner of two dams in the Eel River no longer wants them, creating the chance of a lifetime to remove outdated dams, reconnect a river, and restore the environment.
The owner of the Potter Valley Project (PVP) will surrender their federal license to operate the project after their federal license to operate it expires. The PVP consists of two dams, a diversion tunnel, and a powerhouse. The dams take water out of the Eel River and send it to the Russian River, where it is used to generate electricity. Because the project is old and inefficient, it makes very little electricity. The cost to operate the dams is much greater than the value of the power generated.
But, just because PG&E plans to end power generation, it does not necessarily mean they will remove the dams and restore the ecosystem without strong public pressure. That is why we need you to join us as we demand the Eel River dams’ removal and restoration of California’s wildest river. Finally, after 100 years of damage, the Eel River is making a comeback.
